BACK | PRIMER INDEX | NEXT
Section Two: The Parish Nurse Within Parish Health Ministry What is health ministry and how can it benefit the parish?
He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people. His fame spread to all of Syria and they brought to Him all who were sick with various diseases and racked with pain. those who were possessed, lunatics and paralytics, and He cured them.
Mt 4:23-24
Whether full or part-time, volunteer or paid, the parish nurse is a member of the pastoral team. The nurse works with the pastoral staff to carry out the mission of the parish and to integrate health ministry into the life of the parish. The parish nurse may be directly responsible to the pastor, his designate, or the parish director.
As an independent professional, the parish nurse does not divulge health information or knowledge about parishioners to anyone, including superiors, in the reporting process. Each parish develops its own guidelines for reporting. When sponsored by a healthcare agency, the nurse also reports to a designated member of the agency. Reporting format and frequency are determined by the healthcare agency or parish. It is recommended that a "parish health ministry committee" be developed to work with the nurse to promote health ministry.
It is important that the parish nurse keep an accurate record of time and activities. Since much of the work is done outside of the church facility, it is critical that the pastor/parish director have a good understanding of the roles and activities of the parish nurse. As with any new position, continued funding wifi depend on successfully meeting the needs outlined by the parish. An annual report summarizing the activities of the parish nurse wifi help to communicate to the parish the impact of the parish health ministry program. The report can contain statistics on activities such as number of people served, presentations, screenings, visitations, etc.
Providing support and assistance to the parish nurse is an important element in successfully meeting health ministry goals. If the parish nurse is responsible to the pastor/parish director, he or she must be able to provide support and counsel to the nurse. This is even if the nurse works for a healthcare agency and reports to an agency representative. Supervision of direct professional nursing functions can only be done by nursing professionals. Integration of health ministry into the mission, goals and life of the parish can only come about if the nurse is included in staff functions.
With skin and flesh you clothed me, with bones and sinews knit me together.
Grace and favor you granted me, and your providence has preserved my spirit.
Job 10:11-12
